Hickory Nut Farmstead: Handmade Coffins, Burial Shrouds, & Natural End-of-Life Resources for Doulas

Hickory Nut Farmstead is a beautiful Michigan-based resource for doulas seeking eco-conscious, community-rooted end-of-life options for the individuals and families they support. Founded by funerary artisan Michael Marie Schofield, the farmstead offers handcrafted natural caskets, burial trays, burial shrouds, and urns made from sustainably harvested local materials and plants. In addition to providing natural burial vessels, Hickory Nut Farmstead also offers educational resources on green burial, funeral planning, weaving workshops, and healing-centered community experiences that reconnect deathcare with nature, ritual, creativity, and meaningful participation in the grieving process.

For doulas, this resource can support conversations around environmentally conscious deathcare, natural burial planning, home funeral options, meaningful ritual creation, and personalized end-of-life experiences that honor both the individual and the Earth. Hickory Nut Farmstead also collaborates with the Michigan Deathcare Collaborative to expand education and access to community-centered deathcare throughout Michigan.
