Toward a Better Death: A Conversation with Kevin Dieter, MD
What does a good death mean—and how can we support someone as they approach the end of life?
At Blue Water Doula Collective (BWDC), we believe these questions deserve space for thoughtful conversation. We’re sharing a podcast featuring Dr. Kevin Dieter, who reflects on his journey from family medicine to hospice and palliative care and the lessons he has learned while caring for people who are dying.
His conversation offers patients, families, caregivers, and end-of-life doulas an opportunity to consider both the care people receive and the human connection they need.
Exploring a Good Death
The idea of a “good death” invites us to reflect on what matters most to each person. What brings comfort? Who do they want nearby? What wishes, concerns, or unfinished conversations need to be heard?
Dr. Dieter explores understanding a good death through patient care, encouraging listeners to think more deeply about the end-of-life experience.
For our BWDC community, this is an invitation to begin conversations early, listen with curiosity, and make room for each person’s values and preferences.
Learning to Be With Dying
The episode also introduces the Being With Dying curriculum and its principles. This topic connects closely with our work as end-of-life doulas: offering compassionate presence as individuals and families navigate uncertainty, grief, and change.
Being present can mean listening without rushing, allowing silence, or making room for difficult feelings. We do not always need the perfect words to offer meaningful companionship.
Dr. Dieter also addresses physician-assisted suicide and end-of-life care, bringing a sensitive subject into a broader conversation about dying. We encourage listeners to approach this discussion with openness and respect for differing experiences and beliefs.
An Invitation to Listen and Reflect
Whether you are supporting a loved one, exploring doula work, or considering your own wishes, this episode offers a starting point for reflection.
As you listen, consider: What would compassionate care look like for me—and how can I help someone I love feel heard and supported?
